Course Description

This course will describe the common risk management issues in non-profit organizations from a tax, accounting, legal, and operations perspective. Non-profit organizations are subject to various compliance requirements; this session will examine best practices and pitfalls to avoid. With expert panelists in each of these areas of focus, this topic provides a broad range of issues that affect non-profits. This class will be helpful for accountants, board members, C-suite development, and those involved with overall risk management in a non-profit.

A member of FORVIS National Nonprofit Advisory Services Practice and Center of Excellence. Neely has more than 20 years of audit and advisory experience in public accounting. Her expertise includes financial statement audits, Single Audits, grants management, assessments and compliance, outsourced accounting functions, standards implementation, internal audit procedures, strategic planning, and tax-exempt matters for a wide range of nonprofit entities. Neely also performs forensic work related to various cases for technical matters for nonprofits.

In addition to handling the accounting, consulting, and audit needs of her clients, she advises clients on operational efficiencies, internal controls, and governance issues and routinely shares best practices with clients gained from working with a variety of organizations. She is a highly sought national speaker on technical matters in the accounting community. Neely also served in the United States Navy for four years. 

Neely is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants, where she serves as a board member, TXCPA -Dallas, where she serves as a board member and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, Inc. She holds the Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) designation.

She has been involved with many other professional associations, including Dallas Social Venture Partners, Finance Chair, Arthritis Foundation, Dallas Heroes Project, and Great Girls Network. 

Neely is a 2000 magna cum laude graduate of Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, with a bachelor’s degree in accounting.

Jonathan Blum is a nonprofit and tax-exempt organizations attorney in Holland & Knight's Dallas office. Mr. Blum's experience includes assisting nonprofit leaders in managing their legal matters on a broad array of issues affecting charities, foundations, trade and professional associations, advocacy groups, educational organizations, and other nonprofit organizations. Mr. Blum recognizes the importance of concentrating on the key issues affecting clients and moving quickly to identify practical legal options in order for clients to stay mission-focused and make informed decisions.

Mr. Blum is a frequent speaker on best practices in governance, fundraising, tax compliance and current developments for nonprofit organizations.

Michael Meadows has dedicated over 35 years of his professional and personal life to serving others through a wide array of charitable organizations. His career spans roles such as development officer at The University of Texas at Austin, Director of Development at The University of Texas at Dallas, Executive Vice President at Southwestern Medical Foundation, CEO/Executive Director of the Dallas Zoological Society, and Senior Vice President at Westwood Trust.

In 2019, Michael founded Meadows Family Consulting Group LLC, providing consulting services to tax-exempt organizations. Through his practice, he has served as interim CEO for Dallas County Heritage Society and interim Executive Director of Encore Park. Additionally, he works as a Vice President with Foundation Management, Inc.

Michael's extensive volunteer work includes serving on boards of more than three dozen non-profit organizations. He has been a trustee for The Meadows Foundation and Simmons Family Foundation, and was appointed to the board of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. He also serves on the boards of the Mike A. Myers Foundation, National Center for Family Philanthropy, and TACA (The Arts Community Alliance), as well as advisory boards of the Communities Foundation of Texas, RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Service at The University of Texas at Austin, Hope Supply Co. and the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas.
